Update: It has been revealed that the photo in question is more than likely from the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2. Nevertheless, there are still rumors that Agent Coulson and his team will return in Avengers 4, particularly after the leak earlier this week featuring Tony Stark in a S.H.I.E.L.D. suit.
Nothing but mystery has shrouded the untitled Avengers sequel set to release in May 2019. We know that it is a direct follow up to Avengers: Infinity War, and we know that a good chunk of the Avengers will be returning. Besides, this there was not much for us to know about this highly anticipated sequel, until recently.
In the last week or so, set photos have begun to leak across the Internet, featuring looks at different Marvel stars on set and in costume. This has ranged from seeing Mark Ruffalo in a full motion capture suit, to Robert Downey Jr. dressed in an armored S.H.I.E.L.D. suit.
The latter brought up a lot of questions with Marvel fans, as they wondered why Tony Stark would dress in a S.H.I.E.L.D. suit, seeing as the mysterious government organization was demolished during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The main hypothesis to this question was that the television series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., that revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. is still alive and well, would finally cross into the Avengers films.
This has been something fans have speculated about for years, with no luck. The main issue thwarting any kind of crossover between the two series has been that the Presidents of Marvel Studios and Marvel Television have not always got along well, thus making a crossover between the two series rather difficult.
Finally, however, it would seem we have a glimmer of hope, based on a set photo from Avenger 4 that just recently leaked this week:
This set photo leaked alongside more leaked photos of Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. on set. While there is no absolute guarantee from this photo that we will be seeing Phil Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Avengers 4, and that this might just be a different set for the TV series, it would’ve been rather odd for them to be filming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the same set as Avengers 4.
For those who watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., one of the most confusing parts about this isn’t that Phil Coulson and friends could very likely appear in the fourth Avengers, but that the character Agent Triplett is somehow alive and well. “Trip” bit the dust during the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., however, during the fourth season, framework began in order to attempt to restore his life. Seeing as it is a Marvel series, it would not be unlikely that we see this fallen agent return from the dead within the next season or two in order to appear in Avengers 4.
Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. There is no absolute confirmation that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will crossover with the Avengers. While this is believed to be an actual leak, it could also be fake. Nevertheless, we remain hopeful.
If what this leak shows us actually ends up being true, I am now more excited than ever to see Avengers 4 in May 2019. It will be great to see Phil Coulson return to the Avengers series, after seemingly dying during the first Avengers in 2012. I’m rather curious to see how the Avengers react to the resurrection of their fallen friend so many years later.
Would you like to see Phil Coulson return? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading!
