Casting rumors have been abuzz for years about the 2019 DC film Shazam! For a while, it looked as though Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would appear in the film as Black Adam. However, the Fast and the Furious star seems to no longer be in talks for the role.
Finally, after lots of speculation and no word from DC Entertainment, we finally have an answer on who will play the titular role of Shazam. The answer is Chuck star Zachary Levi, as announced earlier today by Variety. Levi is also notable for voicing the role of Eugene “Flynn” Rider in Tangled. While this would be the first leading superhero role for the comedy actor, it is not his first superhero role overall. Levi previously took over the role of Fandral, one of the Warriors Three, in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Taking the role of Shazam, we can assume, will be quite the step up for Levi.
There is still no word on who will be playing the foil role of Black Adam, but we can imagine the casting process will begin soon, if it hasn’t begun already. The DCEU disappointed fans and critics in the past, but films like Shazam! stand strong as a glimmer of hope on the horizon. I am certainly looking forward to see what Zachary Levi’s comedic acting style adds to the franchise.
